A key premise of secondary teacher education at UTS is to learn ‘on the ground’ from practising teachers.

For this reason, preservice teachers in their first semester of their teaching degree have visited Killara High School (KHS) for a full-day immersion visit to observe lessons, to rub shoulders with teachers and to participate in workshops on classroom management and literacy and numeracy skills.

170 UTS students flooded the gates of KHS to become immersed in the excitement of school life. They were exposed to the craft of teaching through intensive lesson observations that revealed the intricacies of explicit teaching and managing diverse classrooms.

They observed classes ranging from Year 7 music, Year 9 German to Year 12 science; no classroom was off limits as all KHS teachers railed to support the development of the next generation of teachers. The generosity of KHS staff and students was truly heart-warming!

After shadowing KHS teachers in the classrooms, UTS preservice teachers enjoyed a behaviour management lecture run by Deputy Principal Craig Date, and literacy and numeracy workshops led by Elizabeth Casey and Rema Nath.

UTS students became aware of how teaching numeracy and literacy is every teacher’s business. They also learnt the secrets of positive behaviour management to thrive as beginner teachers.

It was an amazing day, and especially that final behaviour management talk. He was absolutely fantastic and everything he said just made so much sense, but I'd never considered it in that way!

UTS students went home after a fulfilling day of learning, with their heads bursting with new ideas and a richer understanding of their chosen profession.

We thank our wonderful partner – Killara High School – for supporting our preservice teachers on their learning journey.
