The UTS Human Technology Institute (HTI) has launched a new online learning course to equip lawyers in Australia with strategic expertise in artificial intelligence (AI).

Developed with the support of LexisNexis, this eLearning course supports legal practitioners respond to the rise of AI, as it transforms legal practice and the needs of lawyers’ clients.

The course gives lawyers the foundational knowledge and skills they need to navigate the challenges and opportunities AI presents for the profession.

“AI is all around us, and legal professionals are at the heart of this period of massive technological transformation,” said HTI Co-Director, Professor Edward Santow, a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Law.

“Lawyers are increasingly being asked to advise clients who want to use AI lawfully and responsibly, as well as clients affected by AI that is deployed by others.

“At the same time, AI is increasingly affecting legal practice itself, with lawyers relying on an ever-growing range of AI-powered products and services.

“Whether providing advice or using AI themselves, lawyers need a solid understanding of the opportunities and risks posed by AI, including making sure they are complying with their professional legal obligations,” Professor Santow said.

HTI is partnering with law firms, as well as community and government legal practices, to support legal staff to build their strategic skills regarding AI, through this self-paced online course and webinar.

The online course covers:

  • the core concepts of AI
  • how legal professionals are using AI
  • the needs of clients who are using, of affected by, AI
  • risks and harms associated with AI
  • how to use AI responsibly in legal practice, including ensuring compliance with professional legal and ethical obligations.

Participants are invited to a 60-minute live webinar, led by HTI experts in AI, regulation and governance. The webinar covers participant questions and comments, and gives an update on the latest technology and policy developments related to the use of AI by legal practitioners in Australia.
