Ten UTS academics have been listed among the world’s most influential in a prestigious annual list of highly cited researchers.

The Clarivate Highly Cited Researchers list identifies leading global researchers who have demonstrated their influence by publishing papers which rank in the top one percent by citations for their field.

Ten UTS researchers made the list across 13 fields of research in 2024:

  • Professor Igor Aharonovich – cross-field
  • Emeritus Professor David Boud – social sciences
  • Professor Oscar Xiaojun Chang – computer science
  • Professor Lei Jiang – chemistry, materials science and cross-field
  • Distinguished Professor Dayong Jin – cross-field
  • Professor Jose M Merigo – cross-field
  • Adjunct Professor Bruce Bing-Jie Ni – environment and ecology
  • Distinguished Professor Guoxiu Wang – chemistry and materials science
  • Dr Jinqiang Zhang – cross-field
  • Professor John Zhou – cross-field 

UTS Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research), Professor Kate McGrath, congratulated the researchers for making the prestigious list.

“These ten academics represent a “who’s who” of researchers at the top of their fields globally, who are making contributions to advancing knowledge across their chosen disciplines,” she says.

“Their outstanding work is tackling global challenges in field such as artificial intelligence, biomedical science, clean energy and quantum materials.”

National research leadership

UTS researchers also featured prominently in the annual The Australian Research magazine, with five leading academics nominated as leaders in their field:

  • Associate Professor Kamal Dua - pharmacology and pharmacy
  • Distinguished Professor T M Indra Mahlia - sustainable energy
  • Distinguished Professor Biswajeet Pradhan - remote sensing
  • Professor Hokyong Shon - water supply and treatment
  • Associate Professor Amie Steel - alternative and traditional medicine
