German Universities Day 2024 Celebrates Cultural Exchange and Academic Opportunities

8 July 2024

On Friday, June 14, more than 170 school students and their teachers gathered at UTS for German Universities Day 2024.

German Universities Day event

This collaborative event, organised by German language schools, the Goethe-Institut, and Sydney’s German universities (including UTS, University of Sydney, UNSW, and Macquarie University), aimed to promote German language studies and foster international connections.

The day kicked off in UTS Central with inspiring speeches and an information session. Students learnt about pursuing higher education at Australian universities and the exciting possibility of studying in Germany. Mr. Felix Schwarz, the Consul-General of Germany, extended a warm invitation to explore educational opportunities in his home country.

During the formal proceedings, Andrew Hurley, Head of School, UTS School of Communication, and Orlando Howells, a final-year student, shared their experiences. Morning tea provided a chance to grab brochures, promotional items, and even some gummy bears. Students were then divided into groups and led to Buildings 10 and 11 for engaging breakout sessions facilitated by the Goethe-Institut and schoolteachers.

As the rain intensified, students sought refuge at the Fantastic Hideout, a cozy venue with billiard tables and comfortable sofas. Despite the weather, spirits remained high as attendees enjoyed Brezeln (traditional German pretzels). The UTS Schools Outreach Team, represented by student ambassadors, conducted indoor campus tours, showcasing UTS facilities and academic life.

The success of German Universities Day 2024 was a testament to the collaborative efforts of many individuals. Special thanks go to Andrea Simmelbauer from the Goethe-Institut, Alison Dean (ADECS), Richard Kable (Ascham), Kath Burton and Allan Olan (SoISE), Brangwen Stone (University of Sydney), and Flora Yin and Jack Edwards (UTS Schools Outreach Team). Additionally, the DAAD, the Consulate of Germany, and the University of Sydney provided crucial financial support.

Looking ahead, organisers anticipate hosting this vibrant event at another campus next year, continuing to celebrate cultural exchange and academic possibilities.
