Specialise in Tunnelling and Underground Engineering skills

The new Engineering major will launch in February 2024 to meet industry demand 

The UTS School of Civil and Environmental Engineering has recognised Australia’s growing demand for experts in tunnelling and underground engineering by establishing a new Engineering major. This pioneering initiative is the first of its kind in Australia and aims to address the nation's expansion in infrastructure development requirements.

The Tunnelling and Underground Engineering major is designed to prepare civil engineers and industry practitioners for careers in the construction and engineering industries, particularly in projects involving tunnels, underground structures and related technologies. Students will obtain in-depth knowledge and practical skills related to the planning, design, construction, and management of tunnels and underground infrastructure projects.  

The major features a diverse range of educational pathways, through graduate certificates and masters programs, tailored to accommodate individuals with varying academic backgrounds and career aspirations.  

A spectrum of critical aspects including modern site investigations, planning, design, construction, management, tunnel boring machine, trenchless technologies, safety and sustainability aspects of tunnelling and underground engineering projects will be covered.  

The Tunnelling and Underground Engineering major presents an exceptional opportunity for students to attain practical insights and real-world experience in the field of tunnelling and underground engineering. 

By incorporating industry expertise into the curriculum, students will develop both theoretical knowledge and hands-on experience necessary to contribute to and lead tunnelling and underground infrastructure projects.

Students will undertake projects that enhance their knowledge and skillset to understand emerging technologies and optimise the design, operation, and management of tunnelling and underground engineering projects. Elective subjects including Project Management, Judgement and Decision Making, Risk Management and Systems Engineering for Managers, will provide additional skills and experience to ensure students are job ready.  

Graduates will be well prepared to pursue a range of career opportunities within the civil engineering and construction industry. These include Tunnel Engineering, Construction Manager, Project Manager, Consultant or Specialist. The exact career path will depend on the individual’s interests, skills, and the specific focus of their masters program.
