UTS - Vietnam ICT Collaboration Boost

Strengthening the transfer of ICT research, training and technology

A visit led by Minister Nguyen Manh Hung and his delegation from the Ministry of Information and Communications (MoIC) of Vietnam took place on Monday 7th August 2023,  at the UTS Nokia 5G Future Lab. MoIC, on behalf of the Vietnam Government, is the policy-making and regulatory body in key ICT areas like telecommunications; radio frequency; information technology, electronics; national information and communication infrastructure. Joining the Minister were leaders from the largest ICT firms in Vietnam like FPT, VNPT, KMS Technology, and Mobifone.

The minister further mentioned the need for research and training collaboration between Australia and Vietnam to support Vietnam's digital transformation strategy, emphasizing the shortage of skilled ICT engineers in Vietnam, which presents an opportunity for partnerships with leading technology universities like UTS.

UTS has a history of engagement with Vietnam, including joint research centres in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. These collaborations align with the Australia-Vietnam Strategic Partnership, which focuses on innovation among its pillars of collaboration. 

Mr Nguyen shared the productive meetings with other counterparts in Australia that promise future collaboration between the two countries. The growing demand for ICT services and infrastructure in Australia is also a great opportunity for industry partners in Vietnam to explore.

The UTS’ Nokia Tech Lab is a testament to the university’s commitment to addressing real-world challenges through partnerships with industry leaders. The discussions between UTS professors and Nokia colleagues about potential 5G use cases in Vietnam, including using Nokia UAVs (drones) for various sectors, demonstrate the practical application of their collaboration.
