UTS experts are available for Federal Budget analysis on issues such as housing affordability, infrastructure, social equity, health and aged care.

Social justice and public policy

Verity Firth, Pro Vice-Chancellor (Social Justice & Inclusion) 
Verity Firth is available to discuss social justice/equity, gender equality, education funding allocation for schools and universities, including impacts on remote/regional students or other vulnerable groups.

Professor Carol Mills 
Carol Mills is Director of the Institute of Public Policy And Governance at UTS. Her expertise covers public policy and public administration, including social and affordable housing, sport and recreation, arts and heritage administration liquor and gaming regulation, disability services, children services and Aboriginal affairs.

Schools and Education

Associate Professor Jane Hunter
Jane Hunter’s expertise is in curriculum, digital learning and pre-service and in-service teacher education. She was a classroom teacher and has held leadership roles in schools, in government bureaucracies in education policy and in large-scale technology innovation programs. Her most recent work seeks to ensure our most disadvantaged schools are well resourced and the quality of teaching is engaging and motivating in every classroom. Jane co-hosts the Talking Teachers podcast which discusses current issues in Australian education that are not being canvassed in other media.

Dr Don Carter specialises in working with teachers to investigate innovative writing pedagogies to improve student performance and outcomes not only in English, but across the curriculum. Don’s research expertise is also drawn from his experiences as a classroom English teacher, head of department and as an ESL consultant with primary and secondary schools in south-western Sydney as well as English Inspector at the NSW Educational Standards Authority. Don co-hosts the Talking Teachers podcast with Jane Hunter.

Emeritus Professor Roy Green  
UTS Special Innovation Advisor, Emeritus Professor Roy Green is an expert on Innovation and entrepreneurship, R&D, industry policy and management.

Health

Distinguished Professor Jane Hall  
Jane Hall is Distinguished Professor of Health Economics in the UTS Business School, and past president of the Academy of Social Sciences in Australia. She is available to comment on health policy, Medicare, research policy.

Professor Rosalie Viney  
Professor Viney is Director of the Centre for Health Economics Research and Evaluation (CHERE) at UTS. She has expertise in the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme, and can discuss health policy and other health issues.

Dr Rachael Murrihy is a clinical psychologist and Director of the Kidman Centre at UTS. Rachael’s specialty is in clinical adolescent psychology research and treatment.

Resilience and disaster recovery

Professor Elizabeth Mossop 
Elizabeth Mossop is Dean of the Faculty of Design, Architecture and Building and Professor of Landscape Architecture. She is available to discuss infrastructure planning and resourcing, disaster mitigation and recovery, urban revitalisation, and the role of planning and landscape design in building resilient communities in the face of climate change.

Professor Martin Loosemore 
Martin Loosemore is Professor of Construction Management at UTS. His research has focused in the areas of innovation, social value, social procurement, risk management, human resource management, gender diversity and equity, cultural diversity and corporate social responsibility.

Professor Alan Morris 
Alan Morris is a professor in the Institute for Public Policy and Governance. He is an expert in housing and urban studies and social policy. His most recent book is The Private Rental Sector in Australia: Living with Uncertainty.

Associate Professor Behzad Fatahi
Behzad Fatahi is the Head of Discipline (Geotechnical and Transport Engineering), focusing on design, construction and maintenance of major infrastructure such as roads and railways. He is available to comment on priority areas for infrastructure investment particularly transport infrastructure and building more resilient and sustainable Australia.

Aged care

Professor of Nursing Aged Care (Dementia) Deborah Parker  
Professor Parker leads the ageing research program for the Improving Palliative, Aged and Chronic Care through Clinical Research and Translation Centre at UTS; and is co-lead on End of Life Directions in Aged Care, to improve palliative care and advance care planning for older Australians.

Professor David Brown  
David Brown is a Professor of Management Accounting with a focus on the design and use of management and accounting systems to address behavioural, decision making and coordination problems in organisations. He is currently examining data from the aged care Royal Commission and can offer expertise on financial factors and their effect on quality and workforce.

Dr Nicole Sutton  
Accounting lecturer Dr Nicole Sutton, can discuss the resourcing of aged care, agencies and public sector spending, in particular spending on science, including R&D.

Disability and National Disability Insurance Scheme

Professor Simon Darcy  
Professor Darcy is a researcher in the area of disability, diversity and inclusion. He has current programs examining employment and social participation as indicators of disability citizenship. Simon is an insider as a power wheelchair user himself.

Professor Tim Harcourt 
Tim Harcourt is Industry Professor and Chief Economist at the UTS Institute for Public Policy and Governance. He is available to comment on the overall economic framework of the Budget plus trade and Australia’s engagement with the global economy. Wage and labour markets, climate innovation and sport.

Associate Professor Karen O’Connell  
Dr Karen O'Connell is an expert in discrimination law, particularly sex and disability discrimination, sexual harassment, and biotechnologies of the body, neuroscience and genetics. She is experienced in law reform, policy development and is a member of the UTS Law Health Justice Centre.
