Advocates for the digital rights of consumers have rejected requests made by media companies to retain their immunity from privacy laws, cautioning that the welfare of the public should not be disregarded in favour of commercial models

Professor Edward Santow has argued that it's necessary to reform privacy laws due to the emergence of technologies such as facial recognition and artificial intelligence.

There is a legitimate limitation on the right to privacy that journalism can justify but … it’s not that all media organisations in all their activities – some which have nothing to do with journalism at all – that should be exempt from the right to privacy.
