UTS student wins Institute of Transportation Engineers Australia and New Zealand (ITE-ANZ) Award

Capstone project earns a significant award

Congratulations to Amy Tran from the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering on winning the prestigiousITE-ANZTrafficworks Undergraduate Student Award. This award signifies the most outstanding piece of individual work (final year project) in the field of transportation engineering by an undergraduate student in Australia and New Zealand. Well done, Amy!

This project examined the movement metrics of shared space by investigating the interaction between vehicles and pedestrians in a multi-modal environment. The research focused on five study areas, four potential shared spaces, and one existing shared space, within the Fairfield City Council and the City of Sydney Local government areas. Through field observations, the study areas were an ideal case study to explore the movement metrics associated with shared space implementations. The findings of the study emphasised the need for transport professionals to account for the relationship between vehicles and pedestrians in a multi-modal environment when designing a shared space.

Dr Kasun De Silva Wijayaratna, Amy’s project supervisor, says “It has been a pleasure to guide Amy through her Capstone project. She has uncovered unique findings in a research topic that is critical for the development of sustainable communities. Her dedication, attention to detail and communication of the subject matter shows that she will be a leader within the transport domain.”

Amy received her award at the ITE-ANZ Annual Breakfast on 22 March 2023, where she received her award and a $1500 cash prize.
