Student Spotlight: Master of Pharmacy

9 January 2023

Curious about Pharmacy? We sat down with Master of Pharmacy student, Charlotte, to get a better idea about what being a Pharmacy student is really like.

Tell us a bit about yourself

My name is Charlotte, and I completed my undergraduate degree in Medical Science at UTS. After doing my undergrad, I started my Master of Pharmacy.

So, what exactly is a Masters of Pharmacy?

Basically, through this course, you can become an accredited pharmacist. We study medications and learn about the formulation, dosage, usage, and how they interact with other medications. After my degree, I’ll be eligible for professional registration.

What has been the most challenging part of your degree?

A Master’s degree is definitely different from undergraduate studies and requires lots of self-learning and self-discipline. This means it is important to get your work-life balance right as it can be an intense (but rewarding) two years! The good news is you’re well supported by the academics here, so you’ll learn a lot without feeling overwhelmed.

What has been the most rewarding part of your degree?

The placements! I have been placed with a relatively large-scale pharmacy, meaning that I get a lot of exposure to what’s going on and what being a pharmacist is really like. It’s incredibly rewarding to be able to apply theoretical knowledge to the real world.  I definitely would not feel prepared to be a pharmacist without going on these placements.

What advice do you have for students interested in the Masters of Pharmacy?

I would say you really need to make sure you have a passion for pharmacy. If you’re interested in the profession, you will love the course. The practical nature and the flexibility of the teaching have been really beneficial for me. My advice would be to plan your future (as much as you can) and stay focused on that end goal of being a pharmacist.
