From Texas with love

8 December 2022

The famed South by Southwest® (SXSW) Festival is heading south of the border – way south – for its inaugural Sydney event. And guess what? UTS’s talented community of students, staff and alumni are invited to collaborate.

Creators, artists and techies will converge on the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) campus and surrounds in October 2023 for a week-long celebration of the very best in music, screen, gaming, technology and innovation.

SXSW Sydney™ has selected UTS as its Education Partner, acknowledging the university’s long history of inspiring the next generation of innovators and future thinkers.

Stellar line up

The partnership will see SXSW Sydney™ panels, workshops and activations pop up throughout campus, and opportunities for students, staff and alumni to participate in the conference programming and events.

UTS students will also have access to the SXSW Sydney™ 2023 internship program, gaining valuable experience with global industry professionals, talent and creatives.

Professor Andrew Parfitt, UTS Vice-Chancellor and President, said it’s fitting that the partnership between SXSW® and UTS has been founded in Sydney’s Tech Central precinct.

“Technology, creativity, and innovation are synonymous with both SXSW and UTS.  We’re excited to be a part of such a renowned global festival and look forward to the opportunity to showcase our campus, our community, and our shared vision to promote positive change in our world.

“This is a particularly exciting opportunity for UTS students to garner industry experience through work and internship placements with SXSW Sydney™, and I look forward to seeing the result of this exceptional collaboration.”

Tickets, please!

SXSW Sydney™ will take place across seven days and nights from 15 – 22 October, 2023. Like the SXSW® in Austin, Texas, SXSW Sydney™ will be a must-attend event for creators and professionals seeking to shape and discover future trends, emerging technology, and access unrivalled networking opportunities.

Colin Daniels, Managing Director of SXSW Sydney™ , said that Sydney’s diversity makes it the perfect incubator for creativity.

“Next October, SXSW Sydney™ will place a global spotlight on our creative community, highlighting the incredible ideas, sounds and skills found in Sydney and the Asia Pacific region."

Thirsty work

Local brewer, Young Henrys, has been named presenting partner for the SXSW Sydney™ Music Festival.

Besides being lifetime supporters of music and culture in Sydney, the team at Young Henrys has also been lauded for their sustainable approach to making beer. And yep, there’s a UTS connection there. Young Henrys is working with UTS Science to develop ways to use algae in the brewing process to lower emissions. And that’s not all. Young Henrys is also working with UTS FEIT to test our Industry 4.0 brewery.

Mind blown

If you think that’s amazing, wait until next October! SXSW Sydney™ is spearheaded by SXSW Sydney Conference, which will feature more than 200 presentations, panels, workshops and mentor sessions, and showcase the most innovative new ideas from budding visionaries.

UTS will keep you up to date with details on the Festival and line up throughout 2023. Watch this space!
