Forging ahead: UTS achieves another world ranking boost

12 October 2022

The University of Technology Sydney (UTS) has continued its steady improvement in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings, rising 10 places to 133rd in the world.

The result continues UTS’s ascent of more than 200 places in these rankings in less than a decade, 61 places in the past four years, and retaining its 9th position among Australian universities.

Earlier this year UTS also maintained its position as the number one young university in Australia and rose a place to eighth in the world in the 2022 Times Higher Education Young University Ranking of universities established under 50 years ago.

UTS Vice-Chancellor Professor Andrew Parfitt said UTS’s results in the latest THE world rankings were a pleasing indication that whatever the challenges, the university continued to gain ground as a leading public university of technology, known for its global impact.

The strongest among the five “pillars” for UTS in the ranking assessment were International Outlook and Citations.

Professor Parfitt said citations of UTS research in particular had been a driver for the THE ranking improvement.

Our rising reputation globally for teaching and research is pleasing to see for the university and its hard-working staff, but it’s also of enormous benefit to our alumni in their professional careers.

“UTS continues to enjoy solid growth in publication outputs and citation counts, which means our researchers are being increasingly recognised internationally for the quality and impact of their work,” Professor Parfitt said.

“The strength in the Citations pillar thus reflects that UTS is producing quality research outputs and our research is well regarded and being cited by other researchers.”

Professor Parfitt said it had also been pleasing to see a lift for UTS and other well regarded Australian universities in the reputation surveys conducted as part of the THE ranking process.

“Our rising reputation globally for teaching and research is pleasing to see for the university and its hard-working staff, but it’s also of enormous benefit to our alumni in their professional careers.

“These rankings reinforce that Australian higher education sector continues to be very highly regarded around the world as a high-quality destination for both students and academics.”
