FASS welcomes Prof Heidi Norman to lead Indigenous portfolio

25 August 2021

Congratulations to Professor Heidi Norman, Gomeroi woman and one of Australia's leading researchers in Aboriginal political history, who has been appointed FASS's new Associate Dean (Indigenous).

UTS Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences is pleased to announce that Professor Heidi Norman is the new Associate Dean for FASS's Indigenous portfolio.

Professor Norman is a descendant of the Gomeroi people from north western NSW. She is Convenor of the ‘Indigenous Land and Justice Research hub’, and a member of the Prime Minister and Cabinet’s Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies (AIATSIS).
She is a leading researcher in Aboriginal political history with an outstanding record of achievement in the Indigenous space. Her research and publication foci include the NSW Annual Aboriginal Rugby League Knockout, the impact of mining in relation to Gomeroi lands, and the first ever study of Indigenous land rights in NSW. She was awarded a large ARC grant to study the benefits of Indigenous land repossession.

Professor Norman's other awards include the UTS Research Excellence Medal in 2015, the National Teaching Excellence Award for Indigenous Studies in 2016 and the inaugural Gough Whitlam Research Fellowship commencing 2017. In 2018 the ABC named her a ‘Top 5’ humanities researcher.

As Associate Dean (Indigenous) Professor Norman will join the Faculty Executive team and be responsible for leading and delivering on our Indigenous strategy, and have oversight of Indigenous Research Centres within the Faculty.

I’m looking forward to continuing the great work in our Faculty advancing Indigenous education, research and engagement.

Professor Heidi Norman

Professor Norman takes over the role from Professor Susan Page, who has moved to Western Sydney University to be Director of Indigenous Learning and Teaching in the Office of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor Indigenous Leadership. While we will miss Professor Page and her intelligent and empathetic leadership of FASS's Indigenous portfolio, we are excited to have Professor Norman take on the role.

I am delighted that Professor Norman will be our new Associate Dean (Indigenous). Her outstanding track record of research excellence and thought leadership, combined with her dedicated and energetic work in communities, ensures that she will bring invaluable expertise to the UTS FASS Indigenous portfolio.

Professor Alan Davison, Dean (FASS)

Congratulations, Professor Heidi Norman!
