5 benefits of starting uni as a non-school leaver

28 July 2020

Whether you started your studies at another university or you’ve taken a year or two to do something else, the time you’ve spent pursuing other passions will uniquely prepare you for a UTS degree. Here’s how.

1

You’ll be ready for whatever uni throws at you

Spent your gap year(s!) overseas, at another institution or out in the workforce? You might not know it, but the skills you’ve gained will be invaluable when it comes to your university studies.  Planning an itinerary, responding to a brief or working in a team environment – you’ll find these sorts of fundamental skills will come in handy in any UTS course.

2

You won’t sweat the small stuff

Lost your passport in a foreign country? Accidentally copied in your boss into an email about how much you hate your job? As a non-school leaver, you’ll probably arrive at UTS having overcome more than a few sweat-inducing moments since high school graduation. The good news? Knowing when to panic – and when to move on – will help you take a rational approach to the challenges of your degree.

3

You’ll have your eye on the prize

Exploring work, travel or other study options is a great way to narrow down what you really want. By the time you start your UTS degree, you’ll be ready to choose a course that’s a good fit for your passions – and you’ll also be committed to finishing what you start.

4

You’ll know there’s life beyond campus

Having spent some time out in the real world, you’ll know that uni is just one aspect of a full and busy life. No matter what you’re up to, these external commitments will help you keep the uni experience in perspective if the going gets tough.

5

You’ll be ready to lead, not follow

The sum total of all your post-high-school experiences means that you’ll come to uni ready to dive right in. Rather than joining a club, you might start one. Rather than daydreaming about your start-up idea, you might launch it. Taking the road less travelled could be the making of you – and of an amazing experience right here at UTS.
