Telehealth coronavirus counselling service opens

23 March 2020

UPDATE: Who is eligible?

From 31st March 2020 anyone in the community who is experiencing stress, anxiety and depression is eligible.

A new counselling service for community members most affected by the coronavirus pandemic has been established by University of Technology Sydney (UTS) The Kidman Centre (TKC).

The service will be bulk-billed for eligible clients with a Telehealth mental health care plan from their GP.

The Coronavirus Psychology Clinic can be accessed by telephone or the videoconferencing platform Zoom.

Registered psychologists based at the Prince of Wales Hospital will conduct the Telehealth clinic for eligible people including:

  • health and medical professionals who have Covid-19 or have been required to isolate themselves in quarantine

  • anyone in the general community, who has been diagnosed with Covid-19 or, is in quarantine or self-isolation

  • pregnant women

  • parents with children under 12 months old

  • people with chronic health conditions or are immune-compromised

  • those over 70

Dr Rachael Murrihy, TKC Director, said these are “confusing and stressful times for all of us.”

“It is normal to feel anxious and worried and being able to ask for help when we need it is very important.

“The Telehealth clinic was set up in response to the rapidly changing situation caused by the coronavirus pandemic and the need to provide psychology services for those with the highest need,” Dr Murrihy said.

The Medicare rebate for The Clinic will be available for 6 months or until the virus abates.

The service will be available from 9:00 am – 5:00pm Monday to Friday.
