UTS's Social Justice podcast 'All Things Equal'

We pride ourselves on an egalitarian society in Australia, but how equal are we? All Things Equal is an investigative podcast going to the root of inequality in our society.

The Centre for Social Justice and Inclusion at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) is extending advocacy on social justice, equity and diversity issues beyond its own campus by exploring popular topics through a social justice podcast, with two seasons currently released.

All Things Equal has covered ‘hot button’ issues, the #MeToo movement and public/private education, with Australian twist. The podcast seeks to spark thoughtful conversations, and inspire a more equal and diverse society through human stories.

Produced in partnership between the UTS Centre for Social Justice and Inclusion and 2SER, the podcast tells the raw stories of individuals and groups most affected by these issues, with researchers and experts weighing in on the broader context.

“There has been brilliant work around issues which matter to Australians. The podcast combines real stories and academic expertise to connect listeners and encourage them to undertake advocacy… something about it applying our academic expertise on so many subject areas around social justice and inclusion to real-world issues as they are affecting Australians today” says Verity Firth, Executive Director of Social Justice at the UTS Centre for Social Justice and Inclusion.

The first season deals with the aftermath of the #MeToo movement, exploring gender, power, and what feminism means today through the voices and perspectives of real women.

In the wake of the #MeToo, many women have spoken out about their experiences in the workplace and the fact Australia lacks any real mechanisms to resolve their concerns and empower women. With prominent legal cases garnering media attention at the time of release, UTS Centre for Social Justice and Inclusion sought to represent the feelings of Australian women.

Season 2 centres around the ongoing education debate around public schooling. We discover the various attitudes towards the education systems issues and hear the stories of kids who are excluded and meet the remarkable people who have been there to catch them.

“Education is a human right, but not everyone is equally included. All Things Equal informs the public to generate discussion and engagement around education. We must first acknowledge inequality if we  are to see a move towards social inclusion” says Firth.
