UTS deepens research links with Brazil

In November 2018, UTS Professors Damien Giurco and Hokyong Shon represented UTS in Belo Horizonte, Brazil as participants in the InPrInt Seminars, organised by Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (UFMG).

The seminar was a result of government funding secured by UFMG, for promoting international research mobility and collaboration.

“It is important that talented students, early career researchers and staff build up international connections to meet new people in their leading research field and contribute to their communities,” Prof Shon said.

The event brought together 200 representatives from universities around the world. Delegates attended presentations on Sustainability, Risk Management and Governance; New Technologies and Frontiers of Science; Health and Well-being; and Human Rights.

Prof Damien Giurco from the UTS Institute of Sustainable Futures presented on Cities, Climate Change, Energy, whilst Prof Hokyong Shon from the UTS Centre for Technology in Water and Wastewater shared his insights in the areas of Climate Change, Natural Resources, Energy, Smart Cities and Water.

The two UTS academics also met with UFMG academic Prof Carlos Chemicaro to visit his innovative pilot-scale water facilities, which engages a broad suite of PhD researchers from several engineering disciplines. Prof. Chemicaro is planning to visit UTS in December 2019 to further discuss potential collaboration via InPrint schemes.

In the near future, UFMG hopes to administer the funds to support the international mobility of PhD students, early career researchers, and senior professors to travel to and from UFMG and overseas partner universities including UTS. The sustainable research funds will provide opportunity for long-term research collaborations and help to build on the already strong Key Technology Partnership between UTS and UFMG.
