It is the end of an era for UTS Graduate School of Health, as Professor Benrimoj retires.
Professor Shalom (Charlie) Benrimoj stepped down from the position of Head of School last week, retiring after an impressive seven years of leadership and support, to not only the students and staff but also the healthcare industry.
Professor Benrimoj helped establish the School in 2011 to address the emerging needs of health professionals, focusing on innovative, practice-based education and high impact research. The School quickly grew under his direction to seven disciplines, with three new disciplines – Genetic Counselling, Speech Pathology and Indigenous Health – launching this year.
The Provost and Senior Vice-President Andrew Parfitt thanked Professor Benrimoj for his leadership. “I wish to take this opportunity to thank Professor Benrimoj for his enormous contribution to the establishment of the Graduate School of Health at UTS. He has worked energetically and enthusiastically to see this School come to life and to grow and be so successful and we can be confident in its future. On behalf of the Vice-Chancellor, I wish him well in retirement.”

The School is in a strong position with record numbers of students and academic staff. The School recently announced that it would be moving its offices into 100 Broadway with the additional establishment of an interdisciplinary primary healthcare clinic. Earlier this month the world-renowned Australian Stuttering Research Centre joined the School’s research portfolio.
Professor Benrimoj was the Foundation Professor of Pharmacy Practice, Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy and Pro-Vice Chancellor (Strategic Planning) at the University of Sydney. He is a visiting professor at the University of Granada and Emeritus Professor at the University of Sydney. He graduated with a Bachelor of Pharmacy (Hons) in 1976, followed by completion of a PhD in 1980 at the University of Bradford in the United Kingdom. In 2010 he came out of retirement to help establish the Graduate School of Health at UTS.
An international search will start soon for a successor to Professor Benrimoj as Head of the GSH.
