Continuing Professional Development Courses

The Institute hosts Continuing Professional Development short courses for practitioners from any background wishing to broaden their skills in sustainable transport practice methods.

All ISF short courses attract CPD points from professional bodies with participants eligible to join on-going discussion groups after course completion to further enhance their knowledge and skills.

Travel Planning

Monday 28 August and Tuesday 29 August 2017, 9am - 5pm.

Presenters: Dr Michelle Zeibots and Nicola Ison

Join Dr. Michelle Zeibots and Nicky Ison for a short course on Travel Planning.

Participants to learn-by-doing through a series of interactive exercises that provide instruction on applying the Travel Plan methodology to a range of different sites (workplace and mixed-use residential). It provides insights and approaches to effective communication with key decision-makers, specifying Travel Plans as part of the regulatory requirements for development consent and on-going management, monitoring and evaluation. 

This short course is useful for:

  • Local Council Officers responsible for regulating local transport and access requirements.
  • State and Federal Government transport professionals responsible for transport policy.
  • Sustainability Officers responsible for improving organisational sustainability.
  • Property Developers & Managers looking for ways to improve the sustainability and cost effectiveness of new developments.
  • Transport Consultants wanting to broaden client services.
  • Travel Managers responsible for managing organisational transport and site access.

About the presenters:

Dr Michelle Zeibots is a transport planner, specialising in the analysis of sustainable urban passenger transport systems. Her research and consultancy work draws together operational, behavioural and governance features relating to multi-modal urban transport networks. Michelle is coordinator of the Transport Research Area at the Institute for Sustainable Futures where she is responsible for strategic oversight within the transport area, and identifying projects for contract research.

Nicola Ison is an environmental engineer specialising in systems based approaches to problem solving, facilitation and development of learning systems. Her research focuses on community based solutions to achieve sustainable development

Integrated Transport and Land-Use

Monday 11 September and Tuesday 12 September 2017, 9am to 5pm

Key presenter: Dr Michelle Zeibots

This course provides an introduction to transport and land-use relationships from a whole-of-system perspective, encompassing physical network operations, land-use morphology and economic agglomeration factors. The course combines theory with practical workshop examples. This two day course will enable participants to understand how Transport networks and land uses combine to influence accessibility, land values and housing affordability. Participants will gain an appreciation of how different modes combine to form overall transport networks how this should influence land use planning, zoning, development and parking controls. They will also see how system feedback processes operate in cities and what this means for improving sustainability.

This short course is particularly useful for:

  • Land-use planners in State and Local Government
  • Urban transport infrastructure and service planners
  • Traffic engineers interested in multi-modal travel demand management
  • Consultants involved in helping to deliver more integrated urban solutions
  • Urban designers involved in transit-oriented developments
