Dr Shonali Krishnaswamy, Head of the Data Analytics Department at the Institute for Infocomm Research (I2R), visited AAi recently in a visit coordinated by Contact Singapore, Sydney. Dr Krishnaswamy presented an AAi Seminar on 4 March on the interaction of research and real-world applications in the area of Big Data Analytics, in which she discussed a diverse range of analytics case studies from industry sectors such as Banking and Finance, Manufacturing, Telco and Transportation. The presentation effectively illustrated how data science innovation and R&D are being leveraged to create transformational impact in these industries. The talk also briefly covered the many exciting opportunities for both fundamental research and applications-driven research in Data Science
I2R is a Singapore Government-funded research institute within the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR). The Data Analytics Department at I2R undertakes both fundamental and applied research in areas such as Machine Learning, Text Mining, Semantic Computing, Data Management and Distributed Analytics. The department has one of the largest R&D teams of data scientists in the region and strongly engages with a number of industry collaborators, both in Singapore and internationally. Dr Krishnaswamy is an Associate Professor at Monash University, Australia, where she was formerly Director of the Centre for Distributed Systems and Software Engineering in the Faculty of Information Technology. She has approximately 200 research publications to her credit and has received numerous outstanding awards. There were about 50 attendees at this seminar including PhD students, professors and managers from UTS and other organisations. Associate Professor Jinyan Li co-ordinated and chaired the meeting, which was one of AAi’s many seminars in a series which presents the latest theoretical advancements and empirical experience in a broad range of interdisciplinary and business-oriented analytics fields.
