Under the Key Technology Partner (KTP) scheme, Prof Yao Lu from the Beijing Institute of Technology (BIT) visited UTS in late December and was hosted by AAi’s Jian Zhang. Prof Lu is the Director of the Research Centre for Intelligent Computation. He has strong research achievements in the areas of image/video processing, object detection and tracking, face hallucination, video event analysis and neural network. During his visit, he gave an AAi Seminar presentation on the topic of Abrupt Motion Tracking. Complex Visual Tracking is an active research area in computer vision which has many practical applications, such as tracking people, animals, or vehicles, and complex video events analysis. Prof Lu’s work includes the application of Intensively Adaptive Stochastic Approach Monte Carlo (IASAMC) sampling to track abrupt motion, based on two collaborative online learning processes, to sample from complex filtering distributions. The historical samples of the simulated Markov chain are exploited to establish a density grid-based predictive model, and the ‘optimal’ transition kernel is adaptively learned by using this model to improve the mix of MCMC sampling. The proposed algorithm is based on two collaborative online learning processes, one of which aims to approximate the target distribution by estimating the density of states (DoS), while the other attempts to estimate the optimal proposal distribution based on the density grid-based predictive model. The proposed algorithm effectively overcomes the local-trap problem in sampling by random walk in the energy space, and also speeds up the convergence rate as a result of its adaptive sampling mechanism. Extensive experiments show that the proposed tracking algorithm works effectively and outperforms several state-of-the-art alternatives in tracking various types of abrupt motion, including sudden dynamics change, camera switching, and low-frame-rate videos.

Assoc Prof Jian Zhang, from AAi, visited Shanghai University as a KTP Visiting Fellow from 6-23 January 2015. Hosted by Prof An Ping, Head of the Department of Electronic & Information Engineering at the Shanghai University, Assoc Prof Zhang and Prof An Ping have agreed to collaborate on project work related to public safety and security. Prof An Ping is a leading researcher in the area of video processing and coding at Shanghai University and collaborates closely with local government and industry. The Department has numerous accomplishments in both teaching and scientific research. The research projects are funded by various national, ministerial, and municipal organisations such as the Natural Science Foundation of China and the High-Tech Research and Development Program of China. A large number of papers have been published in high-level journals and international conferences. The Department also receives financial support from enterprises as a result of its industry collaboration.
