Imagine if the university had called its students together on the first day and asked them to identify ways in which they could respond, firstly within the line of work they are studying,... [and] with the faculty’s resources (such as communication structures, phone lines, people, computers etc.)... How awesome would that have been?
Community Comment on the University of Cape Town’s response to xenophobic attacks in Cape Town in 2008
A special edition of Gateways eJournal was launched in November by Professor William Purcell (Deputy Vice-Chancellor International and Development, UTS) with guests Professor Martin Hall (Vice-Chancellor, Salford University), Sonwabo Ngcelwane (University of Cape Town) and Pauline O'Loughlin (Shopfront Community Program, UTS).
Edited by Martin Hall, Judy Favish, Sonwabo Ngcelwane and Janice McMillan, this edition examines the challenges of community engagement for the University of Cape Town and includes case studies of university-community collaborations around the HIV/AIDS crisis, managing coastal resources, racism, disaster planning, and innovation in manufacturing.
Gateways is published by UTS ePress as a partnership between Shopfront and the Centre for Urban Research and Learning at Loyola University. The journal can be downloaded for free.
