The Human Technology Institute has a focus on close relationships with industry, government and civil society.

Our partnerships

These partnerships support our Human Technology Labs to test, validate and benefit from HTI products, services and insights and help put liberal democratic values—especially fairness, accuracy and accountability—at the heart of how technology is designed, developed and used.

HTI is particularly grateful for our collaboration with our three advisory partners: KPMG Australia, Gilbert + Tobin and Atlassian.

  • Human Technology Institute

Why do I think the Human Technology Institute's important? AI and systems-based information is growing and it's growing rapidly.

The responsible use and deployment of technology is an area of really intensifying focus worldwide. This is because emerging technologies new technologies, technologies like AI and machine learning, they present incredible opportunities, but they also present issues and risks that are really complex and multifaceted.

Is technology making us a better community, a more connected community, or a more disconnected community?

There’s a lot of hype about new technologies like artificial intelligence machine learning, but at its core, most of the public doesn't understand how they work, what the limits of their capabilities are, how are they going to fit into society, laws or rules, and that means, whether rightly or wrongly, that people can't build confidence in how they're going to be used and applied.

Technology's benefits aren't evenly distributed and we've seen how this combined with the speed and the nature of the change is creating challenges.

The biggest challenge I think is around trust and integrity and regulation and governance of AI. It’s interesting – every time AI is presented, it’s always presented in human form, which I think creates a little bit of uncertainty and fear in people's minds.

We make collaboration software, and our mission is to unleash the potential of teams. We believe that we can work together with the Human Tech Institute to apply this experience to help teams work together successfully, cross functionally in a way that helps them tackle these challenges.

KPMG is brand is very much founded on trust and integrity and so it's very consistent with what I think needs to be considered in the evolution of AI

Gilbert and Tobin brings to the table for the HTI, a deep knowledge of law and technology and the intersections between those things. And any way that we proceed with technology in the future is going to involve the law.
As an organisation, I think our goals align really well. Our mission is to advance the rule of law and obviously the Human Technology Institute is looking to make sure that artificial intelligence and other technologies are applied with human rights principles at its core.

A positive future is one where people that are responsible for the development of different technologies truly understand the privilege and the responsibilities that they have.

One in which we take full advantage of all the opportunities that science and technology bring, but also ensure that embodied and embedded in the way we use technologies is protection of human beings and their rights.

Improving quality of life for society and humanity.

One where society at large trusts new technology, and that trust is warranted.

AI has got so much to contribute. Used properly it can enhance our lives, make everyone's lives easier, more seamless and just make everyday living simpler and more effective for people. That has to be a great thing.
