Studying a Master of IT in Australia on a scholarship | advice for international students

Hear from Tlaitirang about his experience of being awarded the Postgraduate Academic Excellence Scholarship to study Master of Information Technology at UTS.

Studying a Master of IT in Australia on a scholarship | advice for international students transcript

My name is Tlaitirang Sekgobela Rathete. I’m studying Masters of Information Technology. I received the Postgraduate Academic Excellence Scholarship.

What drew me towards UTS was that I really loved the weather back home from South Africa and Australia has the best weather comparison.

And then mixing it with it being the best technology university in Australia was just a straightforward choice. Back at home when I did my bachelor's in computer science, a lot of the curriculum was quite outdated while over here I can see that they're a bit ahead of the curve.

They even have a course I'm taking currently, which is RS development, which is Apple coded with SwiftUI—something that I don't even know if way back home they’re going to start implementing such techniques.

My scholarship supported me immensely because it really reduced the financial burden from back home with my family.

It allowed me to be able to come in and experience this amazing opportunity and be able to actually study here and survive the cost of living.

My biggest advice I’d give to international students, is to write down all the academic achievements, whether it be volunteer work, high school marks or previous achievements that they got through their career.

By actually portraying your best self and showing everything you've done, all of these contribute towards you actually having that chance to get a scholarship.

Studying computer science in Australia on a scholarship | advice for international students

Hear from Phuong about her experience of being supported by the UTS GCE A Level and IB Scholarship while studying the Bachelor of Computing Science (Honours) at UTS.

My name is Phuong Ngan, I'm studying Bachelor of Computing Science Honours. And I received the UTS GCE A level and IB Scholarship.

I've been so curious about how computers and programs work. I want to immerse myself in the technology.

So that's why I chose UTS. In my home country everything was quite theory-based, but here I'm getting engaged with the industry stuff day by day.

My favourite spot on campus would be the Alumni Green where I can just put myself down the sun and get some fresh air. And after class, my friends and I usually grab lunch and just have a chat on the grass. UTS offers a number of scholarships, and if you're interested in applying for the A level and IB scholarship, make sure to be prepared first and also make sure to mark the deadline.

And thirdly, my advice would be just put all of yourself in the application. So any volunteering or any work experience, just put yourself in there.

UTS International student Aria Salcedo

My scholarship helped me focus on my degree and gain industry experience. UTS has a central location. It’s also very modern compared to other universities. Being a young person, I thought it’d be really nice to go to a young university, because of the vibe and feel of the place.
