Talk to real students about the hands-on science degrees at UTS

Science is more than lab coats and textbooks - it’s about asking questions, solving real problems, and making discoveries that change lives. At UTS, we bring science to life through hands-on learning, cutting-edge research, and real-world impact. Open Day is your chance to explore what that could look like for you.

Before you join us on the UTS campus for Open Day, we gathered some current science students to offer you some guidance as you begin your journey.

Babel

Meet Babel

A 5th year Bachelor of Medical Science student, Babel Isho knew she wanted to study science at UTS but wasn’t sure which path to follow. With the flexibility UTS science degrees offer, Babel explored a variety of paths to find her passion.

“When I first started at UTS, I enrolled in a Bachelor of Advanced Science (Pharmaceutical Sciences) because I was interested in medicine and enjoyed science. But after two years, I realised medicine wasn’t the right path for me. I still had a passion for science, so instead of switching to something completely different, I transferred into a double degree in Medical Science (Health related sciences) and Business (Marketing). I was able to carry over many of my previous subjects through recognition of prior learning, which made the transition smoother. This new path has opened exciting options for me in areas like health tech, medical devices, and healthcare consulting. Changing your mind isn’t a setback, it’s part of the journey. University gives you the flexibility to explore and reshape your direction without losing the progress you’ve made.”

Jasmina

Meet Jasmina

A Bachelor of Science student with a focus on Environmental Biology, Jasmina Misic’s journey is like many science students’ stories. She knew she wanted to focus on the environment and sustainability, but didn’t quite know where to start.

“If you’re someone wants to work in sustainability, UTS has many options to help you begin this journey. Depending specifically on what you want to study or career goal you're focused on, UTS has many choices. Ranging from Environmental Biology, Marine Science, Climate Science, and Sustainability you can take your pick and choose the option that you're most interested in. Studying any of these subjects can assist you in your goal of working in sustainability. In my experience of studying Environmental Biology, I've had the opportunity to learn about many topics including cell genetics, ecosystems and urban sustainability. Look through the UTS Handbook so you can have a clearer idea of what subjects you'll be studying, depending on what course you pick.”

Alicia

Meet Alicia

Having always been drawn to all things medical, Alicia chose to study science at UTS. With years of experience behind her, she has a few words for future students who are looking at enrolling in a medical science degree at UTS.

“If you are looking at entering the field of Medical Science or diagnostics, a good start is to apply for a Bachelor of Medical Science or a Bachelor of Science majoring in Medical Science. Within this degree, specifically the Bachelor of Medical Science, there are three streams. Pathology, Laboratory Medicine Professional and Medical and Health Related Sciences. All of these streams will start with the fundamentals of human science involving chemistry, human biology and data. Each stream will then differ in the later years, with all these majors focusing on different aspects of medical science and diagnostics. After university, you might be wondering where to go next. Don’t be scared to put your hand up for any internship or placement opportunities. As these experiences become the window of opportunity to trial and learn what you want to do with science.”

Dhanisha

Meet Dhanisha

Keen to learn in a state-of-the-art labs, Dhanisha also wanted to make sure her options extended far and wide regarding potential careers in science. Eager to get a taste of life as a scientist, she didn’t want to wait too far into her degree to get into the lab. At UTS, she didn’t have to.

“Getting hands-on lab experience early in your degree is totally possible at UTS. As someone who wanted the same thing when beginning my undergraduate degree, I found that the science faculty at UTS is super hands-on with practicals right from the start. Usually, all first-year science students do the same core subjects, with both semesters incorporating classes that feature practical components. With that being said, UTS provides a diverse range of laboratories, each designed for specific purposes (e.g., Super Lab, Hive Lab), which you will have the chance to explore as you progress through your degree. Most, if not all, UTS science subjects have practical classes that teach various types of scientific skills, as well as space for you to use what you have previously learnt in other labs. Side note: UTS Science Super Lab is one of only two in Australia!

UTS Science also goes beyond the lab. If you're looking to study science but also eager to explore careers beyond the traditional lab, UTS Faculty of Science offers several double degrees that allow you to integrate your scientific expertise with other disciplines. Many students have decided to pursue this path to combine their scientific interests with fields like education( e.g. Bachelor of Science Master of Teaching in Secondary Education program). These specialised degrees are designed to give you a solid foundation in science while also opening doors to diverse career opportunities. I highly recommend this if you don’t like to limit yourself to just one area of study and want to explore how you can apply your scientific knowledge!”
