Overview
The intention of this scholarship is to support a commencing Indigenous Australian student who is identified as a potential high achiever and who may have barriers to undertaking tertiary studies.
Who is eligible
To be eligible for the Scholarship, an applicant must meet all of the following criteria:
- be of Australian Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent and provide either: a Confirmation of Aboriginality from a Local Aboriginal Land Council or other Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander organisation; or
- a UTS Statutory Declaration form accompanied by two written references from Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people from the applicant’s community who can confirm their identity and are not an immediate family member; and
- A full-time commencing UTS Undergraduate coursework student (including honours courses) in the year of the scholarship selection; and
- Have successfully completed at least one (1) session (equivalent to 18 credit points) of study in an eligible course; and
- Be enrolled in a minimum of 18 credit points in the Scholarship offer session; and
- Demonstrate financial disadvantage either by:

- Applying through the Universities Admissions Centre (UAC) for an Equity Scholarship and by receiving a means-tested Commonwealth income support payment (such as Parenting Payment Single, Disability Support Pension, Carer Allowance, Austudy, ABSTUDY, Youth Allowance), or by providing comprehensive information demonstrating exceptional financial hardship; OR
- by making an appointment for an alternative financial assessment with the UTS Financial Assistance Service in the Student Services. This option is only available to applicants who have been deemed ineligible based on UAC’s financial hardship criteria or who have been unable to submit an Equity Scholarship application.

Selection process
As demonstrated in the Scholarship application and interview:
- Motivation to succeed in their chosen course;
- Potential for receipt of the Scholarship to increase the likelihood that the candidate will be able to complete their chosen UTS course at a higher level of performance than would otherwise be the case, as demonstrated in their Scholarship application.
- Academic merit based on the weighted average mark (WAM) of their current UTS course
- In addition to financial need, preference will also be given to students who are able to demonstrate one or more other educational barriers or applicant attributes as assessed by the UAC Equity Scholarship, including:
- The educational disadvantage criteria include:
- Geographical Disadvantage
- Sole parent responsibilities
- Carer responsibilities
- Long-term medical condition, disability, or ongoing effects of abuse
