Overview

This PhD scholarship is offered as part of the NSW Affordable Housing Doctoral Training Network. The successful candidate will work with leading researchers alongside government agencies, industry partners and community organisations, to develop innovative research that improves the delivery, sustainability and liveability of affordable housing across New South Wales.

The scholarship supports interdisciplinary PhD research investigating how planning, urban design, sustainability, policy and innovative construction can contribute to more affordable, resilient and equitable housing outcomes. Candidates will have the opportunity to undertake industry-engaged and policy-relevant research with strong pathways to real-world implementation.

The PhD research project offers flexibility for candidates to develop a research proposal aligned with the Affordable Housing Doctoral Training Network and UTS research strengths.

Potential research topics include, but are not limited to:

- planning and policy innovations to support innovative affordable housing delivery

- equitable and inclusive neighbourhood design to improve the location, accessibility and liveability of affordable housing

- sustainable and climate-resilient affordable housing developments

- green infrastructure and nature-based solutions for higher-density affordable housing communities

- low-carbon construction and modern methods of construction (MMC) for affordable housing

- frameworks for assessing housing affordability, sustainability and liveability

- planning, governance and implementation pathways for innovative and scalable affordable housing delivery

- digital technologies, urban analytics and evidence-based planning to accelerate and scale affordable housing delivery

- climate adaptation and community resilience across different affordable housing models

- integrated housing, transport and infrastructure planning to support equitable and affordable housing delivery

Selection process

The selection committee will comprise members of the UTS Affordable Housing Network team.

The research is designed to generate practical outcomes that directly inform policy, planning practice and affordable housing delivery across New South Wales.
