Overview

To increase the number of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people working in Genetic Counselling. The Scholarship aims to support an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person studying a Master of Genetic Counselling at UTS Graduate School of Health.

Who is eligible?

To be eligible for the Scholarship an applicant must meet all of the following criteria: 

  • Be of Australian Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent and provide either: 

    o a Confirmation of Aboriginality from a Local Aboriginal Land Council or other Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander organisation; or 

    o a UTS Statutory Declaration form accompanied by two written references from Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people from the applicant’s community who can confirm their identity and are not an immediate family member; and 

  • Have received an offer or enrolled in the C04374 Master of Genetic Counselling course at UTS.
  • All candidates must apply via the UTS online Scholarship application form to be eligible.
  • All candidates must be available to attend an online interview if required.

 

Preference will be given to students residing in NSW or with a strong connection to Country in NSW. If there are no eligible applicants fulfiling this criteria the scholarship may be awarded to a student residing in another Australian state or territory.

Selection process

As demonstrated in the Scholarship application and interview, the applicant must demonstrate: 

  • Passion for improving the health and well-being of the NSW Indigenous population through genetic counselling
  • Potential to become an effective and energetic agent for positive change in their genetic counselling career and for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities
  • Likelihood that the receipt of the scholarship will increase the Recipient’s ability to complete the UTS Master of Genetic Counselling degree at a higher level of performance than would otherwise be the case
