The Vice-Chancellor's Democracy Forum (VCDF) is UTS’s premier public lecture series.
Each year, the Vice-Chancellor invites significant thinkers across various fields to engage in open dialogue on topics crucial to today's society and its advancement.
Since 2020, the Vice-Chancellor’s Democracy Forum has brought leading thinkers from around the world to UTS to interrogate the forces reshaping democracy. Early forums with Professor Jason Stanley, Rana Foroohar and Joseph Stiglitz examined the rise of authoritarianism, the power of Big Tech, and the economic settings that underpin inequality and democratic fragility, alongside panels on the war in Ukraine and the global future of democracy.
More recent events have turned to technology, identity and information, with Meredith Whittaker and Fintan O’Toole exploring AI and surveillance, the politics of victimhood, and the pressures facing democratic institutions. Our latest forum featured historian, author and cultural critic Sarah Churchwell, who examined the stories America tells itself and how national myths can fuel polarisation, disinformation and democratic erosion. Across these conversations, regular hosts and moderators, Emeritus Professor Roy Green and Dr Anna Funder steer the discussion, drawing connections between economics, culture, media, technology and public trust.
Together, these events form an ongoing, interdisciplinary dialogue about how democracy can be renewed in an era of polarisation, rapid technological change and geopolitical instability. You can revisit past conversations — in the recordings below. Stay tuned for the 2026 program to see which powerful voices will join these important conversations.
