UTS is the home of climate conversations next month with Climate Action Week Sydney returning from 9-12 March.
At UTS, Climate Action Week Sydney is a chance to spotlight the depth of our expertise and the real-world impact of our work. Across science, engineering, design, business and law, UTS researchers and practitioners are collaborating with industry, government and communities to cut emissions, build climate resilience and drive fair transitions. From reimagining cities and infrastructure to transforming energy, data, fashion and finance, our staff and students are testing ideas that move quickly from campus to country – and helping shape a more sustainable future for Australia and beyond.
With a week packed full of panels, workshops and evening events, there’s something for everyone.
Overview of Events
12 March
Community-led Sustainable Cities puts a spotlight on food, waste and climate-resilience solutions co-designed with more than 400 locals across Sydney. Hear residents and researchers share how neighbourhood ideas are becoming practical, place-based projects that reimagine what a sustainable inner city looks like when communities lead.
9 March
Renting and roasting in summer or freezing in winter? Bring your questions to this practical climate clinic. Researchers from the Institute for Sustainable Futures and UTS Business School share cheap, renter-friendly ways to weather-proof homes, cut energy bills and stay comfortable—and help you design a personalised action plan
11 March
Grab scissors, pens and big ideas. In this hands-on workshop you’ll explore the triple planetary crisis: climate change, pollution and biodiversity loss, then collaborate on a zine that turns concern into creativity. Leave with inky fingers, new connections and a shared publication that keeps conversations about sustainability moving.
12 March
From poetic to darkly funny, this evening of readings, sound and performance crosses species boundaries to explore how stories change our responses to biodiversity loss and the climate crisis. Join UTS artists, writers and musicians as they invite you to listen differently and imagine new ways of living on a damaged planet.
12 March
Australia stands at a crossroads. This interactive session invites you to imagine a future where First Nations lore, ecological intelligence and intergenerational responsibility guide climate decisions. Step out of a “situationship” with Country and into a committed relationship built on reciprocity, shared power and life-affirming systems.
11 March
Join the Centre of Excellence in Sustainable Fashion & Textiles and DISSH for an evening celebrating circular design. See UTS and FDS TAFE NSW students transform unwearable garments into new collections, then hear a panel with Dr Lisa Lake, Athena Savvas and emerging designers on the future of circular fashion.
10 March
The built environment is one of the world’s biggest climate levers, yet sustainable buildings are still treated as niche. This session unpacks how design, policy, finance and culture are nudging Australian buildings towards net zero, and what it will take to make low-carbon, climate-resilient spaces the everyday norm.
9 March
Join founding members of the Pacific Youth Environment Network as they reflect on 25 years of sustainability and climate action, and look ahead to the next 25. Bringing together voices from investment, policy, community, education and innovation, this timely conversation comes as Australia prepares to host COP31.
10 March
Bridging the gap between climate ambition and reality means stepping into the messy middle – the complex, uncomfortable space between today and the future we need. This event gathers systems-change practitioners to explore how we move beyond isolated efforts and accelerate joined-up, transformative action.
9 March
The Climate Networking Event, hosted by UTS Deep Sector Engagement, brings together researchers, industry, government and collaborators for an evening of ideas and connection. Brief showcases of key UTS climate capabilities lead into structured networking around capability clusters, sparking new partnerships and practical solutions.
