About SDG 13: Climate action

Climate change is already affecting every nation. Australia is experiencing more intense droughts, bushfires, floods and storms. Ecosystems and local economies are under threat. SDG 13 commits governments, industries, and communities to take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts.

UTS was the first Australian university to sign the United Nations Climate Emergency Declaration in 2019. Our staff, students and researchers have mobilised to help reduce greenhouse pollution, develop technical solutions, facilitate social change and just transitions, and develop the resilience of human and ecological systems to the impacts of climate change.

Here are some examples of our work at UTS contributing towards SDG 13.

Algenie's mission is to revolutionize algae cultivation economics, making sustainable bioproduction financially competitive with fossil fuels while actively removing carbon from our atmosphere

UTS has united sustainability and innovation experts to lend their knowledge and industry experience to the next generation on how to reach net-zero.

UTS is on a journey transitioning to solar energy. We’ve installed PV solar on our campus building roof tops and also forged partnership agreements with solar farms in rural NSW.

Most experts agree it is not too late to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees, but only if we have the right policy and legislative tools to achieve rapid decarbonisation.

Trailblazers for the Goals

UTS has experts working towards the SDGs all over campus. The Trailblazers for the Goals are a campus-wide network of researchers and experts advancing the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

You can contact a trailblazer to discuss their work for the SDGs, or they can connect you with other experts in the space.

Institute for Sustainable Futures

Sven is a Professor and Research Director at ISF specialising in global energy decarbonisation. He develops net‑zero pathways supporting SDG 13 and has published climate mitigation pathways for all G20 and EU nations and six African countries. He is a Lead Author on decarbonisation for the IPCC AR7 report to be published in 2029.

Climate Change Cluster

Peter is Director of the UTS Climate Change Cluster and an expert in biotechnology, specialising in algae bio‑systems and biomanufacturing for climate mitigation. He founded the NSW Deep Green Biotech Hub and advances SDG 13 through industry‑focused solutions to major climate challenges.
