Centre for Advanced Modelling and Geospatial lnformation Systems (CAMGIS)

We conduct research in spatial information systems focussed in various applications and software that can be used particularly in the predictive systems and mapping applications. This research activity include developing systems such as bushfire risk assessment, coastal sensitivity index ranking systems, flood warning systems, oil-spill trajectory systems, soil erosion assessment systems, landslide early warning systems, spatial based earthquake risk assessment systems; noise and propagation modelling, carbon monoxide (Co) propagation modelling, location-based services and others.
We use latest imaging technologies and state-of-the-art sensors (e.g. Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), Laser Scanning Systems such as Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR), Terrestrial Laser Scanning Systems (TLS), Global Positioning Systems (GPS), Drone-based remote sensors (optical, infrared, thermal, hyper-spectral and LiDAR etc.) for various Earth observation applications and monitoring of environmental phenomenon.
Geographical Information Systems
The research will be conducted on GIS in various applications and software that can be used particularly in the predictive systems and mapping applications. This research activity will produce various systems e.g. bushfire risk assessment, coastal sensitivity index ranking systems, flood warning systems, oil spill trajectory systems, landslide early warning systems, location-based services and others.
The GIS field is characterised by a great diversity of applications and concepts developed in many areas: computer science, disaster management, surveying, geology, geography, decision making, resource management, agriculture, statistic, and many others. Research in advanced GIS technologies is to enhance the methodology for decision making in various applications for best management practice. The GIS for spatial and temporal modelling will lend itself as a base of research excellence, not only for Masters and PhD research but also in the formulation of innovative and inventive solutions for real world problems.
Remote Sensing / Digital Image Processing
The innovative research on Remote Sensing/ Digital Image Processing will promote the advancement in technology of many earth-observation related applications, especially in natural disasters, agriculture, fisheries, biodiversity, transport, environmental modelling and others. Remote sensing research and development will mainly focus on research to understand the fundamental knowledge of the Earth and its biophysical processes and to develop and improve techniques for analysing and interpreting remotely sensed data from earth observation sensors. Various remote sensing based methods and analytical techniques will be explored and developed such as production for libraries of object improvements modules to enhance the technological capabilities for various aspects of satellite tracking and mapping.
The centre will explore to use latest imaging technologies and state-of-the-art sensors (e.g. Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), Laser Scanning Systems such as Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR), Terrestrial Laser Scanning Systems (TLS), Global Positioning Systems (GPS), Drone based remote sensors (e.g. Optical, Infrared, Thermal, Hyper-Spectral, LiDAR etc.) for various Earth observation applications and monitoring of environmental phenomenon. The research will provide an environment where faculty, staff and students can work together to advance knowledge in the application of remote sensing technologies in Ecosystem Science and Natural Resource Management, Environmental Modelling, Radar Technologies, and Advanced Digital Image Processing, in which multidisciplinary approaches to environmental problems will be stressed with plenty of hands-on experience.
Complex Modelling / Geo Computing
Integrated and ensemble models (using statistical, probabilistic, data mining and artificial intelligence etc.) that is best suited for enhancing the prediction ability of the existing methods in various Earth observation and natural resource management.
Decision Support Systems
The proposed centre will embark research on the demonstration of the complexity of relationship between the climate changes (both at micro and macro level) and its direct impact on natural hazards in Australia. It will also focus on the utilization of geoinformation technologies (GIT) to study the natural disasters and to provide technical solution to the local councils. Additionally, the CAMGIS will research about the different types of prevailing natural hazards (i.e. bushfires, coastal erosion, floods, mass movements etc.) to reduce the impacts that can be taken prior to their occurrence, by adapting spatial information technologies (Decision Support Systems) to support increased coordination among multiple programs of risk management by examining the application of these technologies to the task of identifying, analysing, assessing, treating and monitoring. The increasing frequency and severity of natural disasters coupled with technical advances mean that there are interesting paradigms and scenarios that have come forth, posing both opportunities for the proposed CAMGIS.
Data Simulation and Visualisation
Maps are generally used as a medium for framing, understanding, navigating, and exploring our complex world. In the last decade, information (both textual and maps) has moved to computers. Finally, the stakeholders and end-users through computers and mobile devices displaying this information. CAMGIS will explore and produce diverse array of visualisation schemes to support and enhance end user’s abilities as they explore and build understanding of the world around them.
Spatial Modelling in Renewable Energy
The research will be using multi-sensor space-borne remote sensing data and geographical information systems (GIS) in various applications in renewable energy mapping applications. This research activity will evaluate renewable energy such as wind, solar, wave as well as bioenergy in Australia and the rest of the world. The GIS-based spatial and temporal modelling will allow the scientists and stakeholders to build decision support systems tools when developing integrated renewable energy master plan. The research focus areas are Renewable Energy including Bioenergy, Solar Energy, Wind Energy, Wave energy, Tidal Power, Hydro Power, Energy Efficiency and Energy Policy.
