School disciplines

The School of Electrical, Mechanical and Biomedical Engineering contains 7 disciplines. See below for information on each discipline.

Biomedical Engineering

Biomedical engineering (BME) merges engineering principles with biological and medical sciences to design, develop, and improve healthcare technologies, such as medical devices, prosthetics, and diagnostic tools.

Communications and Electronics

We’re advancing the next generation of communication technologies, building faster, more reliable, and secure connectivity. Through leading research in 5G, 6G, edge computing, and network security, we’re enabling the future of smart cities, autonomous vehicles, and the Internet of Things.

Electrical Power and Energy Systems

Electrical Power and Energy Systems (EPES) is a branch of engineering and applied science that manages the generation, transmission, distribution, and utilization of electricity. It constitutes the infrastructure of the modern electrical grid, designed to deliver energy reliably from sources to end-users while balancing load and demand

Mechanical Engineering and Manufacturing

Mechanical Engineering and Advanced Manufacturing is a field that combines traditional machine design with cutting-edge technology—such as AI, robotics, and 3D printing—to create, improve, and automate high-precision products and production systems. It transforms concepts into, for instance, sustainable, smart, or highly customized products

Mechatronics and Robotics

Mechatronics and Robotics is an interdisciplinary engineering field combining mechanical, electrical, and computer engineering to design and build intelligent machines and automated systems.

Networking and Cybersecurity

Networking and cybersecurity are deeply intertwined fields, with network security serving as a crucial subset of broader cybersecurity that protects the integrity, confidentiality, and accessibility of data as it travels across infrastructure.

Signal Processing and Analytics

Through innovation, applied research and industry collaboration, we drive advances in telecommunications technologies to uplift Australia’s digital capability. Our partners also benefit from access to UTS’s world-class research facilities, including the UTS TechLab industry research hub and the Data Arena visualisation environment.
