Clinical accreditation programs

Certain local health districts and hospitals offer Clinical Accreditation Programs, commonly known as CAPs. Each CAP is related to one particular specialty area (e.g. neuroscience CAP, children's CAP).

Certain CAPs are recognised for subject exemptions from relevant postgraduate UTS: Health courses. This means that registered nurses who have completed, or are completing, the relevant CAP will be exempt from one UTS subject. Students seeking subject exemption must submit an application for credit recognition with all supporting documentation to the Student Centre for processing prior to the last week of February.

For example, students in the Graduate Certificate in Critical Care Nursing who are employees and have completed or are completing the Critical Care CAP with the Northern Sydney Local Health District, Westmead Private Hospital or North Shore Private Hospital do not need to undertake or pay for the UTS Specialty Clinical Practice subject.

CAPs are usually competency-based programs that reflect the standards relevant to a particular specialty practice. Support for participants completing CAPs is most often provided by on-site Nurse Educators. Some employers give CAP participants paid study leave.
