8cp; prerequisite(s): IELTS score 5.0 (students with an IELTS of 6.0 and above are exempt from this subject) (only for undergraduate international, exchange or Study Abroad students)
This is the first of two subjects specifically for international students. The aim of these subjects is to ensure that students' language and study skills have developed sufficiently to enable them to successfully participate in classes alongside other UTS students. The subjects focus on developing the language and learning skills required for tertiary study in Australia. They integrate the four macro-skills – reading, writing, listening and speaking – into a thematic approach that looks at a variety of contemporary issues in Australian culture and society. These issues are linked to subjects that may be studied in subsequent years at UTS. Students take a critical/analytical approach to understanding and producing written and spoken texts appropriate for an Australian tertiary context.
