This subject gives students practical experience in the processes of policy change in and out of institutions. Through exploring the functions of the state and the operations of power between stakeholders, students are expected to develop both analytical competencies for exploring policy problems and the practical skills in developing alternatives. Students look at both theory and practice in the roles of politicians, parties, community, and the processes of negotiation between power groups and intervention from the less powerful. It explores the often difficult process of political struggle, lobbying and collective action to ensure policy change. Developing advocacy strategies for change assists students to understand broad policy directions and dominant paradigms and how to argue against these on behalf of groups not well served by them. This is an advanced-level subject which requires a melding of theory and practice. Students read widely on current political issues and are expected to become problem solvers.
