Developing and nurturing virtual communities (known also as 'online', 'cyber', 'web' communities) is a challenging task. This subject focuses on the phenomenon of virtual communities, its application in different areas of human activities and the research and development activities in the area. The subject covers the underlying information technologies and architectures supporting virtual communities, methods for developing such communities and different factors that influence the growth and success of virtual communities. The subject also covers a broad range of environments that support collaboration over the Internet, and the cultural aspects of virtual organisations and global communities.
