Master of Engineering (Extension)
This course provides an opportunity at master's level for professional engineers to extend in depth and breadth the knowledge and skills gained in their undergraduate studies. The course is an extension of the traditional Master of Engineering (C04271) in that it also includes a sub-major in one of the fields offered as majors.
The course follows an integrated approach to professional practice through professional engineering subjects, subjects relating to the major and sub-major, an independent project in at least one field of engineering, and a set of electives.
This course allows students to choose a program of study that deepens the body of knowledge acquired in their first degree as well as expands knowledge boundaries into policy and engineering management areas. It also provides an opportunity to broaden knowledge in another field through a sub-major, giving an added advantage to students who seek career options in multidisciplinary areas.

The sample program below shows a suggested sequence of subjects for the Civil Engineering major with a Structural Engineering sub-major for a full-time student commencing the course in Autumn session. Students in other majors follow a similar sequence. The program is intended as a guide only and does not take into account such factors as recognition of prior learning, changes in attendance mode and subject availability, or satisfactory academic progress. Students should consult the Timetable Planner to confirm the availability of subjects in the current academic year.
Note: The project subjects, 42908 and 42003, must be undertaken in successive sessions, typically the final two sessions of the course.

Careers
Students who hold an undergraduate engineering degree are able to enhance their knowledge and ability through postgraduate-level study in their respective majors, enabling them to gain and hold employment in relevant engineering fields. The course allows students to be desirable to employers that seek multidisciplinary teams.

Students are required to complete 96 credit points, comprising:
- professional engineering (18 credit points)
- major, including project (42 credit points)
- sub-major (24 credit points); and
- electives (12 credit points)
The sub-major must be taken in a different field to that of the major.
The project component consists of a preparatory subject and a project (in the area of the major) which must be undertaken in successive sessions, typically the final two sessions of the course.

Additional information
Course duration
This course is offered on a one-and-a-half-year, full-time or three-year, part-time basis for applicants with a UTS-recognised bachelor's degree in engineering. For applicants without recognised qualifications, it is offered on a two-year, full-time or four-year, part-time basis.
The course is made up of subjects that provide students with flexibility. Classes are usually held in standard mode (weekly attendance) or block mode (attend classes only two or three times during the session per subject).

Admission requirements
To be eligible for admission to this course, applicants must meet the following criteria.
It is a requirement that the bachelor's degree be in engineering and relevant to the applicant's proposed major, with no more than 25 per cent of subjects failed.
The major is selected at the time of application to the course. Applicants who do not intend to undertake a specified major must complete a subject nomination form and attach it to their application.
The English proficiency requirement for international students or local applicants with international qualifications is: IELTS Academic: 6.5 overall with a writing score of 6.0; or TOEFL iBT: 79-93 overall with a writing score of 21; or AE5: Pass; or PTE: 58-64 with a writing score of 50; or C1A/C2P: 176-184 with a writing score of 169.

International studentsVisa requirement: To obtain a student visa to study in Australia, international students must enrol full time and on campus. Australian student visa regulations also require international students studying on student visas to complete the course within the standard full-time duration. Students can extend their courses only in exceptional circumstances.

Recognition of prior learning
Students may be eligible for up to a total of 24cp of subject exemptions based on recognition of prior learning (RPL) as follows:
- Students who have completed subjects deemed by the faculty as being equivalent subjects in a postgraduate program or UTS recognised undergraduate engineering program of a minimum of 4 years or equivalent.
- Subject exemption is applicable only to 12cp from CBK90743 Electives (Engineering), 6cp from CBK90982 Choice (Professional Engineering) and 6cp from the options in the relevant major.
Other/additional RPL may be granted via subject substitution to an alternative/advanced postgraduate subject in a similar field of study.
To be considered for recognition of prior learning, subjects must normally have been completed no more than ten years prior to the commencement of this course.
