Commencing candidature

Student to do's

  • Attend Faculty orientation session
  • Become familiar with requirements and timelines
  • Attend subject sessions
  • Build a relationship with supervisor/s, be clear about all details of working relationship
  • Refine research question and methodology
  • Work on literature review
  • Prepare a sound work timeline
  • Meet with supervisor/s at regular and stipulated times

  • Give developmental feedback on students preparatory work
  • Meet with student at regular and stipulated times

Ongoing requirements

Student to do's

  • Satisfactory completion of all subjects
  • Complete semesterly review of progress
  • Present at Research Student Forums
  • Work towards expected work submission date

Supervisor to do's

  • Complete semesterly review of progress
  • Assist student in preparation of presentations and attend Research Student Forums.

Candidature confirmation

Student to do's

  • Read guidelines and rules for assessment
  • Prepare assessment document
  • Present to Assessment Panel
  • Incorporate feedback from Assessment panel into work plan

Supervisor to do's

  • Nominate external assessors for Assessment Panel
  • Monitor preparation of assessment document
  • Sit on Assessment Panel
  • Discuss assessment outcome and feedback with student

Data collection and analysis

Student to do's

  • Prepare UTS Ethics application
  • Prepare Ethics applications required by external bodies
  • Implement data collection plan
  • Write as analysis proceeds
  • Maintain open mind to findings

Supervisor to do's

  • Make certain student gets appropriate advice on preparation of ethics proposal/s and confirm ethics application is appropriate and well constructed
  • Oversee student's data collection processes
  • Encourage student with ongoing writing
  • Engage with student in discussing results

Writing up

Student to do's

  • Write frequently and consistently
  • Offer work to supervisor/s for feedback
  • Work to agreed timeframe for submitting written work and receiving feedback

Supervisor to do's

  • Read work as student writes
  • Provide substantial feedback
  • Work to agreed timeframe for receiving written work and providing feedback
  • Discuss potential thesis examiners with student

Thesis submission for examination

Student to do's

  • Notify Graduate Research School of intended submission date
  • Prepare thesis for examination
  • Complete necessary documents to be submitted with thesis
  • Submit thesis to Faculty for examination

Supervisor to do's

  • Nominate examiners for thesis
  • Oversee preparation of thesis for examination
  • Complete necessary documents to be submitted with thesis
  • Confirm readiness of thesis for submission

Final submission

Student to do's

  • Read examiners reports
  • Make any amendments necessary
  • Print and bind thesis
  • Submit thesis to Faculty

Supervisor to do's

  • Discuss examiners reports with student
  • Oversee amendments to thesis
  • Confirm all amendments complete

Graduation

Once the final submission of your thesis has taken place you will be eligible to graduate.
