Law
Sustainability is integrated into many course areas across the faculty with specialised subjects including Environmental Law, Climate Law and Carbon Markets, International Environmental Law, International Trade Law and the Environment , Environmental Ethics, and Environmental Planning and Development Law.
DR SOPHIE RILEY: Sustainability is relevant to the discipline that I teach in a very important way because I teach environmental law, and also animal law. In environmental law of course, Australia is supposed to be guided by principles of ecologically sustainable development. That’s enshrined in quite a number of pieces of legislation, including planning laws in NSW, laws that protect threatened species, and also environmental protection at the Federal level.
Students that have a knowledge of international law, environmental law, climate change law, they will be able to produce evidence of this and if they’re aware and they understand how important their knowledge is, it’ll put them ahead of the queue if you like.
JESSICA SHEEHAN: What I really enjoyed about studying at UTS was its very practical, forward thinking focus. For instance, you’re really taught how to critically analyse quite effectively. That’s a skill that can be applied in many different fields, indeed law and everything else so I really enjoyed that.
I’m looking forward to undertaking an international law subject and getting an idea about more about our international obligations and how they’re being played out in Australian law, what Australia’s role is internationally and how we can all combat things like climate change and the role that law will play in dealing and mitigating with the impacts.
