My advice to anyone considering this degree is to go for it!
Why Social and Political Sciences?
I was compelled to study Social and Political Sciences at UTS primarily because I wanted an avenue that not only maximized my critical thinking skills but also allowed me to delve into rich, nuanced content – which is exactly what I got! UTS specifically has an incredible way of amalgamating practical and theoretical work that enhanced my understanding of concepts, I believe it is important to express content in a non-linear way in order to truly grasp knowledge effectively.
My studies have provided me not only an avenue to creatively express content but also broaden my perspective on particular social issues. As the course holistically champions independent thinking, it has empowered my voice and given me academic confidence in tackling challenging issues. My law subjects have unequivocally delved into the more theoretical component of my degree, with topics often interchanging within my social and political science subjects. I greatly enjoy this intersection of content as it provides two unique approaches to the same topic.
I thoroughly enjoy the discussion-based approach that evokes polarizing yet idiosyncratic ideas and perspectives from classmates, giving opportunity for everyone to pitch in and confront any predispositions of topics.
Where I hope my degree will take me
With my combined degree, I want to pursue a career as a working lawyer but also play a fundamental role in law reform, advocacy as well as government potentially.
My advice to anyone considering this degree is to go for it! You will definitely not regret choosing this course as it brings together liked minded individuals within a completely open and effective environment. Because of my high performance within Social and Political Sciences cohort, in 2017 I will be working as a U:PASS leader for the respective subjects. U:PASS is an incredible initiative to support student learning. Hopefully I see you there!
Social and Political Sciences for me so far has been thoroughly enjoyable and has exceeded my expectations, but make sure as a student you are aware of the skeleton of the course and its compatibility to your ambition – always follow your passion!
