My key research interest is in developing new journalism practices (tools and ideas) to help better communicate the big social changes in our global polity. As a postdoctoral research fellow at the Centre for Media Transition I'm examining what constitutes best practice journalism at the local-global interface, with a particular focus on reporting complex issues like the refugee crisis and climate change.
My trajectory to this place came in the form of years reporting in papers, magazines and online in Australia and in the UK and my own co-created entrepreneurial journalism website reporting from 10 African countries over a six-month period www.itbeganinAfrica.com
I teach in both the journalism and social and political sciences programs at the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. I believe in combining theory with real world expertise and I am passionate about practice-led research so, for example, my doctorate involved the production of original feature articles with refugee populations in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo. I have also developed a new reporting practice to help better prepare journalists for complex reporting assignments and this is currently being trialled with industry and student volunteers.
