Local Government Postgraduate Courses
The UTS Centre for Local Government, part of the UTS Institute for Public Policy and Governance, is the only university unit in Australia, and one of a few worldwide, that designs, develops and delivers courses that are tailor-made to the education, training and development needs of professionals and elected representatives in the local government sector.
Our degree courses are developed after extensive local government consultation and are designed to make maximum benefit of the knowledge gained from the Centre's concurrent research and consultancy activities. Our courses provide the most up-to-date knowledge on local government, from Australia and around the world. Sessions are presented by expert practitioners who work, in or with local councils.
Flexible course delivery and learning environment
Our courses are offered in an interactive workshop style, and students typically remark on the real benefits of shared learning with a group of local government colleagues. Both part-time and full-time study is available, as well as new online study options, and students can prepare a personal study plan to match the requirements of their career and other commitments.
Not in Sydney?
Even if you don't reside in Sydney, you can still study with us. Our flexible block-delivery means you only need to attend face-to-face study for five to six days per subject each session (semester). The face-to-face sessions are usually in two blocks of consecutive days (two or three days each block, usually one to two months apart). The remainder of the session you will be actively involved in self-directed study and online discussions with your fellow students. In 2020, the majority of local government subjects will also be offered in online, distance mode.

Our Postgraduate Degrees
Unique in Australia, this program is aimed at tomorrow’s local government leaders. It provides graduates with the knowledge to better understand the issues, build skills and to rise to leadership in the workplace.
This program focuses on organisational management in a local government environment. Learn about what local government is, what it does, and how it can perform better in order to deliver quality outcomes for your community.
Through this program, students learn to rise to leadership in the context of local government. Importantly, you will gain insights into the role of local government in shaping and building places and communities.
Learn why leadership is important for people in local government and how capability, capacity and credibility contribute to community outcomes and strategic visions
So why leadership is really important for people working in Local Government and being involved in Local Government? We see it as being connected to what we call the three C’s and the three C’s are around building Capability, building Capacity and building Credibility.
So when we talk about Capability we’re talking about the individual skills that a person has. How am I going to lead better in the work that I do? How do I use the role that I have in my council or in my community to better outcomes? Using professional skills such as being able to lead change, being able to negotiate effectively, being able to understand my own behaviours and the behaviours of others.
Then we talk about Capacity and what does Capacity mean for a Local Government organisation, or for an organisation that a Local Government is connected to? And building the Capability of the individuals then in turn builds the Capacity of that organisation to deliver better outcomes to its community and to its stakeholders. Be it around aligning to strategic visions to community outcomes. Then in turn we like to think that that finally adds to the Credibility of building Local Government as a sector that people look to for creative and innovative ways of working, offering great practical solutions to the challenges of contemporary social world and basically enabling social good, I guess at the end of the day.
So a lot of the feedback we get from people who attend our courses is that they really appreciate the fact that our subjects have been designed by a combination of research and academic thinkers, and practitioner thinkers. So we know that the work that people are doing in councils is really important to think about and to understand the studies behind it and the theories and the models behind it. But we also know that it’s not until you really apply that in your workplace that you bring that to life.
The other great benefit to coming on a leadership course at UTS IPPG, is that it’s the opportunity to meet other leaders. So, one of the great benefits of leadership thinking is sharing it with your peers and what better way to do that than in a classroom environment of people who are interested in both the research and the study side of it but also really know what it means to apply it in a real world context.
This course builds capacity for delivering better planning and building outcomes through more effective development assessment. It is designed for those seeking to become leaders in the field.
