Applications open for 2019 IPPG Postgraduate Scholarship
Passionate about making positive change in your community?
Applications are now open for the UTS Institute for Public Policy and Governance (IPPG) Postgraduate Scholarship for public policy and local government professionals seeking to broaden their knowledge and skills through postgraduate study.
The scholarship is open to new students commencing the Master of Applied Policy or Master of Local Government at UTS, with the recipients receiving $5,000 scholarship over the course of their studies.
The merit-based scholarship has been established to support professionals working in policy and local government who are interested in pursuing postgraduate study, and to recognise the often diverse pathways leading to these careers.
Putting postgraduate study into practice
Maraika Ropte, an IPPG Postgraduate Scholarship recipient studying the Master of Applied Policy, says the scholarship has given her the opportunity to further her passion for work that benefits people and has direct positive impacts on the community.
Working with a number of charities, she is keen to use her degree to influence policy decisions to make meaningful change in the sector.
“I would like to be actively involved in driving change in matters that affect society more broadly and keep ensuring that the interests of vulnerable members of society are met. Being able to provide policy advice to a third sector agency would be incredibly rewarding," she says.
“I chose to study this course at UTS for several reasons: The particular offering of core and elective units appeared to me to be the most contemporary and applicable out of all the different Universities’ offerings, and the course combines theory and practice, enabling me to directly apply the learnings to my work."
Fellow scholarship recipient and Deputy Mayor of Narrandera Shire Council, David Fahey, says studying a Master of Local Government has provided him with practical skills and frameworks in strategic thinking and processes.
“The more I have learnt the better I have become in my work. You can actually achieve something for the community because you know the procedures, policies and the background. You need to have in-depth knowledge of how to progress forward for the benefit of the whole community," he says.
David says the scholarship made postgraduate study more achievable, especially being based in regional New South Wales.
“I’m very appreciative of the fact the Scholarship was awarded to me; it means a lot to me personally and it was an affirmation that I’m on the right track with my thinking. It also assists in the cost of study and traveling to Sydney from remote regional New South Wales.”
Flexible study for tomorrow’s changemakers
The Institute’s courses have been designed by leading thinkers and practitioners to support the next generation of policymakers and changemakers, providing students with the opportunity to:
- Work alongside leading academics and expert practitioners in a dynamic, interactive learning environment
- Engage with practical, real-world challenges and emerging trends through debates, case studies, group discussions and presentations
- Gain strong conceptual and dynamic practical skills which can be immediately applied to your professional life
For Maraika, the flexible block-mode of study has enabled her to foster a healthy balance between work and study.
“I am taking this as an opportunity to extend my conceptual and practical skills – I am studying this course while working full-time, so I am hoping to pursue my career goals at the same time," she says.
“The way this course is delivered in block mode as well as by distance allows me to keep working full-time so I can continue to pursue my career goals while studying and directly apply learned content to my work. UTS is known for having flexible course schedules and a student cohort that is also in the workforce at the same time."
From 2019, the Institute is also offering new online study options across its specialist postgraduate programs, in addition to its flexible block-mode of study and part-time and full-time study options.
