Project Title: The role of bioturbators in blue carbon cycles
Supervisors: Dr Peter Macreadie, Professor Peter Ralph and Dr Daniel Nielsen
PhD conferred: 2017
This project investigates the role that bioturbators - things that mix up the sediment, such as crabs, yabbies, worms - play in the cycling of carbon in the marine environment (blue carbon).
The role that microbes play in this process is little understood and this project will add to the understanding about the relationship between bioturbators, microbes, and carbon sequestration.
The focus of this project will be largely on seagrass environments since they play a vital role as global carbon sinks yet are being degraded worldwide by impacts of coastal debvelopment and environmental change.
