Wayside Chapel and UTS Research Partnership
Creating and demonstrating social impact is becoming a central issue for not-for-profit organisations. Not-for-profit organisations are looking for new and innovative ways to achieve the social change they seek. In this context, Wayside Chapel has opened a social enterprise - the Heart Café - at Bondi Beach
Wayside Chapel has a long history of providing programs and services to the most marginalised members of Sydney’s community. It has recently developed a new program - the Wingspan Project - that provides support, personal development, training and work opportunities for at-risk youth. An important part of this program is the opportunity to undertake a traineeship in the Heart Café.
Wayside Chapel and the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) have established a research partnership that will follow the development of the Heart Café and draw on global research to provide advice and feedback to Wayside Chapel. The project will also develop new insights into the complexity of managing a social (or hybrid) enterprise that will benefit the growing social enterprise sector as well as contribute to academic work in this field.
Managing Hybrid Enterprises: A Practical Guide - This guidebook draws on research insights about hybrid organisations. It is for practitioners in the non-profit sector considering how to diversify their funding base or for those wanting to start up a social enterprise. Access the full guidebook here.
