The Teaching for Learning Futures (TLF) program supports academics to develop the understanding, capability and confidence to teach subjects aligned with learning.futures - UTS's university-wide approach to blended learning. As well as encouraging innovative and active teaching with a strong focus on learning, we aim to build connections between academics within and across disciplines to promote opportunities for future collaboration.
- The program benefits academic staff who are new to UTS as well as existing staff who are coordinating subjects and wish to enhance student learning through the design and teaching of your subjects.
- It comprises six modules which guide you to develop your practice across the core areas of teaching, designing, assessing and evaluating to enhance learning and the student experience.
- Combining online activities with face-to-face classes, the program models a blended approach that allows you to experience and explore the potential of online learning environments, including how to build interaction online.
- In using UTSOnline the program has the ‘look and feel’ of a UTS subject, giving you access to a range of key tools and technologies that build engagement, which you can adapt to your own subjects. This includes an e-portfolio as a device to reflect on learning and develop practice. In addition, the program showcases innovation and highlights diversity at UTS by drawing on the expertise of academics and the experience of students from multiple disciplines and faculties.
- The program is designed to fit busy academic workloads and while the series spans approximately 12 weeks, each module involves only around 5 hours (combined FTF and online) typically run over a period of 2 weeks (small variations to fit the session calendar).
- Participants will receive a Certificate of Completion on completion of the modules of the program including the e-portfolio. Should participants wish to extend their development, they are encouraged to undertake the Graduate Certificate in Higher Education Teaching and Learning.

Module 1: Teaching to enhance learning
Presenter: Jan McLean
6 August - 19 August 2019
F2F session: Tuesday 13 August, 2.00-4.30pm, Room CB01.27.014
Explore approaches to understanding learning and practicing teaching in universities, including the rise of graduate attributes, active learning and blended teaching. This module comprises two parts and provides a rationale for the focus on learning and the UTS learning.futures approach, supporting participants to consider factors that impact on how your students learn and to examine key ideas for how you might develop your teaching to enhance learning.
Module 2: Active and collaborative learning
Presenter: Adam Morgan
20 August - 2 September 2019
F2F session: Tuesday 27 August, 2.00-4.30, Room CB01.27.014
A broad set of active and collaborative learning techniques, along with the philosophies of learning and teaching underlying their design, are explored in this module. Suitable for both tutorial and larger teaching spaces, the techniques introduced in the face-to-face session enable you to experience the effects and benefits they deliver for your students. Opportunities to share experiences and to reflect on the effectiveness of various techniques are also provided.
Module 3: Designing for learning.futures
Presenter: Jo McKenzie
3 September - 16 September 2019
F2F session: Tuesday 10 September, 2.00-4.30, Room CB01.27.014
Refresh your subject design to be consistent with the UTS learning.futures approach. This module focuses on the design of learning experiences for students and understandings of blended subject design. We explore ways of designing subjects that align what you want students to learn with the teaching approach and activities used, as well with the assessment tasks. We discuss how the UTS model of learning and the learning.futures approach are integral to promoting engaging, interactive and inspiring student learning environments in UTS subjects.
Module 4: Assessment and Feedback
Presenter: Peter Kandlbinder
17 September - 30 September 2019
F2F session: Tuesday 24 September, 2.00-4.30, Room CB01.27.014
Learn how to apply the principles of good assessment and feedback practices to a variety of classroom or online activities. In this module, we look at how to adapt more traditional forms of assessment, such as essays and examinations, to be compatible with the learning.futures approach, prioritising authentic assessment and identifying significant opportunities for students to receive feedback. Various assessment techniques are covered, including peer feedback, self-assessment and criteria benchmarking used by UTS staff to make learning more effective and engaging for students.
Module 5: Teaching in Linguistically Diverse Classrooms
Presenters: Neela Griffiths & Deborah Nixon
8 October - 21 October 2019
F2F session: Tuesday 15 October, 2.00-4.30, Room CB01.27.014
The four previous modules are drawn on to explore ways in which you can evaluate your teaching practice. We discuss different data collection methods and sources, the questions to ask and how best to integrate this information with your own context and preferences. We also examine contemporary quality indicators and national regulators of relevance to the higher education sector. Finally, we discuss how this module fits in with your career progression through collection of evidence of good teaching practice.
Module 6: Evaluation and analytics to enhance learning
Presenters: Jan McLean & Ann Wilson
22 October - 4 November 2019
F2F session: Tuesday 29 October, 2.00-4.30, Room CB01.27.014
This session explores ways in which you can focus your teaching to enable linguistically diverse learners to fully participate, engage in and maximise learning in the subjects you design, coordinate and teach. The session explores the academic communication skills of reading, writing, speaking and listening, and supports you in developing strategies that are relevant to your specific teaching context. Finally, we will discuss your plans for integrating these ideas into your teaching using an inquiry-based approach.
