Collaborative solutions to complex challenges
We work with organisations of all sizes to deliver tailored solutions for people with disabilities, their families, carers and the broader community—from the health services level and implementing new protocols of care through to providing custom service for an individual.
The academic team at the Centre for Health Service Management have led the effort to bring together all UTS teams conducting research in support of people with disabilities. Professor Jo Travaglia, Dr Deb Debono and Dr Hamish Robertson are collaborating with Onemda on projects concerning patient and service provider data access as well as evaluations driven by the principles of human-centred design.
At UTS, we aim to take a uniquely interdisciplinary approach to industry partnerships that deliver new innovations in disability services and technologies. Rather than looking at your project through a single disciplinary lens, we call on the vast knowledge and experience of the broader UTS research community. This allows us to pull together the right set of expertise for each and every project.

Our research partnerships span the public, private and not-for-profit sectors. Partners include:
- Onemda: This new partnership will focus on the development of an innovation centre with a focus on therapeutic rehabilitation, innovation and assistive technology.

- Greystanes Disability Services: This longstanding collaboration has produced a range of assistive robotics prototypes for people with disabilities.
- Northcott Innovations: Projects include a step-climbing wheelchair attachment to help electric wheelchair users to traverse kerbs and single steps and the development of a design thinking process to reframe housing challenges faced by young people with disability.
- Achieve Australia: This partnership produced an evaluation of the impact of independent living on people with physical and intellectual disabilities.
- National Disability Insurance Agency/Council for Intellectual Disability: This collaboration produced an accessible information guide for people with intellectual disability in NSW and Victoria.
- NSW Ministry of Health: We partnered with the NSW Government to improve services and system responses for people with intellectual disabilities
- National Disability Insurance Agency: This project delivered design recommendations for an assistive technology hub in Australia.
- St John of God Healthcare Richmond Hospital. Produced in partnership with UTS’s interdisciplinary Graduate School of Health, this project examines the role of anger and perceived injustice in maintaining the symptoms of PTSD.
UTS’s recent Campus Master Plan development has resulted in a tech-driven, highly connected campus and hands-on facilities that support the latest disability services research. Facilities include:
- the UTS Data Arena, an immersive space where researchers and industry partners can gain new insights into a research problem by visualising and interacting with their data.
- ProtoSpace, an innovation environment for the rapid prototyping of new manufacturing technologies. ProtoSpace provides access to the tools and expertise that enable innovation in product development, including the latest 3D printing technologies.
- Rapido, an advanced technology development unit to support the development of new hardware and software prototypes and solutions.
- Graduate School of Health, home to facilities that support disability research in speech pathology (The Australian Stuttering Research Centre) and physiotherapy (The Clinical Neurostimulation Laboratory).
