ABDUL: When I first came to UTS, I wasn’t particularly aware of the sustainability initiatives that were running at UTS. It was something that developed while I was studying at UTS. There’s so much happening around the campus. Our new UTS engineering buildings are based on sustainable energy. It just got me interested.
JIANGUO: Engineers have a responsibility to provide a technical solution to the world. That’s why we need to work on this. This is a real issue we identified to threaten our economy, threaten our civilisation. Then we have to find a solution to it. Well, one solution is very simple, it’s renewable. Renewable will be the way. We have lots and lots of energy around us. So anything you do must help the sustainability.
ABDUL: I selected a Masters which had no majors – it had the opportunity to choose the subjects that I wanted to study. The sustainability and ecology was one that striked me pretty well. It had a lot of field trips in it, it’s more of a 1-to-1 physical exposure to go to these fields and realise what’s happening in the real world and make decisions and make proposals to allow for changes that would make things more sustainable.
I’m from Pakistan, and I’m looking for finding a work place environment in Australia. I’m quite optimistic about the sector. I’ve been working in a company that’s related to energy and energy-efficiency and lighting. I’ve been involved in the project at university that’s related to more sustainable design in Engineering. The future of sustainable engineering looks quite bright.
