From foundations to roof in little more than a month, the Blackfriars Children’s Centre is fast taking shape in front of a group of small but keenly observant – and impatient – youngsters.
What’s been happening?
Work on the building’s distinctive series of pitched roofs, clad in silver metallic sheeting, has been completed. Frames for the L-shaped building’s walls have also sprung up and windows are being installed. Once the building is watertight in late July 2017, the interior fit-out will begin.

However, for many of the children, the outdoor play spaces – where landscaping is about get underway – are of paramount importance. So what outdoor facilities will they enjoy when the centre opens?

The preschoolers (ages two to five) space will consist of:
- chicken pen
- raised veggie garden
- soft-fall area for climbing equipment
- build-your-own-cubby area (for future Bob-the builders!)

Out of the mouths of babes
There should be plenty to keep the children entertained and engaged when their new outdoor play spaces are finished, but what are their favourite outdoor activities? Sage and Cecelia tell us they enjoy playing in the sandpit and making sandcastles, while Xavier has fun in the 'mud' kitchen. When Coralie goes outside to play, she heads for the bikes, leaving An and Sam D to get busy with diggers and dump trucks. And, as for Idris, he says he loves everything outdoors!

Even before it’s finished, their new childcare centre has been offering daily opportunities for observation, discussion and learning experiences. Now, a set of specially commissioned jigsaws means they can even ‘build’ their new Blackfriars Children’s Centre.

Delivery of the new centre is just around the corner. While weather and other factors can impact timelines, this is the current program:
- Construction works complete – September 2017
- Licensing of new centre – late 2017
- New centre opens – by 2018
